“Be Happy”

This I believe happened when I was a child, I have always believed if you want to do something, just go out and do it. When I was a little boy, I have always doubted myself. I was overweight for my age and small for a child. On the other hand, Dr. Howard my fifth grade teacher would always have a positive attitude when I came into class. He wouldn't care about what people said about him, he would tell the whole class silly stories about his experiences in life, and sometimes they're were depressing. He’d also playfully make fun of us. He would always say speeches in the begin of class to get us in the zone. But on this one day, he said “ If you're not happy in what you are doing, then what is the point of doing it?”
This speech didn’t hit me at first, but after a couple months, I realize that if he didn’t say that speech I would not be the same person I am today. For example, this one time I volunteered to play baseball. I had to attend practice constantly, and I got so tired and didn't enjoyed it at all. So I quitted and decided to play basketball. So till this day forward, I play basketball for that reason. And now I'm one the best basketball players in my school. If you doing something doesn't make you happy, don't do it.
I believe that people should do something that they are happy to do. Do what makes you happy in life and not what people want you to do. Be excited when you're doing the activities that makes you happy.

2nd Trash blog
One essential question that I came up with Trash, by Andy Mulligan, is that what was the significance of having the suitcase and why is the police trying to hunt it down? As I kept reading more into the novel, I then realized, the importance of the bag. The suitcase lead the three boys (Raphael, Gardo, Rat) to find a locker key with a code. This code leads to six million dollars, it was stolen by the vice-president. The police find out and they ask some question about the bag to Raphael, but he doesn't cooperate.
Both the article and book are about child property. In the article “Child poverty in the U.S. is among the worst in the developed world”, by Christopher Ingraham, he talks about the child property rates in the US. In the article it explains that, “Nearly one third of U.S. children live in households with an income below 60 percent of the national median income in 2008 - about $31,000 annually. In the richest nation in the world, one in three kids live in poverty. Let that sink in… With 32.2 percent of children living below this line, the U.S. ranks 36th out of the 41 wealthy countries included in the UNICEF report. By contrast, only 5.3 percent of Norwegian kids currently meet this definition of poverty.” Then the it says, “ More alarmingly, the share of U.S. children living in poverty has actually increased by 2 percentage points since 2008. Overall, 24.2 million U.S. children were living in poverty in 2012, reflecting an increase of 1.7 million children since 2008.” Both of these quotes explain a lot about the United States of America, it shows that we are barely doing anything to help these kids.
Trash, has many people talking about the story. Raphael talks about his city(Behala), “... there’s a lot of things hard to come by in our sweet city, and one of the things too many people don't have is toilets and running water. So when they have to go, they do it where they can” (1). This quote is from Olivia, “ The Behala children are beautiful, and to see them on the rubbish tips all day can break your heart. If you come to this country, do the tourist things. But come to Behala too and see the mountains of trash, and the children who pick over them. It is a thing to change your life” (84). Both of these quotes explain explicitly about the city of Behala. But the government system is really broke.

Trash Blog
In the book Trash, Fourteen year olds Raphael and Gardo, have been knowing each other the longest, and with a younger boy, Rat. To figure out the mysteries bag Raphael had found during their daily life of sorting through trash in a third world country's dump. One day, Raphael finds something very special. He came into a conclusion to keep it, even when the city police offers a reward for its return. All three dumpsite boys have no education, no parents, no home, and no money. The book is also in different people's perspective through out the whole book.
Out of the two weeks that we have been doing lit-circles, I've noticed many things Trash that could happen in reality. This might be one of my favorites books that I have ever read. This book has taught a lot of things, like you might have to do everything yourself in reality. Trash, is a different is something else, when you compare the books that I have read to Trash. All in all, Trash is the G.O.A.T (Greatest Of All Time).
If the author was here, I would like to ask Andy Mulligan that how did he come up with the whole plot. After that, I will tell him what amazing job he did with Trash, and how it changed my thinking in a whole different level. Then, talk about who helped him to create Trash. And when did he come up with it.

3rd quarter blog
My biggest improvement in English Lanuage Arts was that I started to finishing my assignments with some effort and without cheating. During 1st and 2nd quarter I used to not finish my assignments and I ask people "what's the homework for ELA" then tell them to give me the answers. Now in 3rd quarter I learned my lesson by just doing it on my own, and its so much easier to do it on your own than asking people. Another improvement I've made this quarter is that I haven't had any problems with the teacher (Mrs. Larson). Back in 1st and 2nd quarter Mrs. Larson and I use to have trouble understanding each other. She usually pick on me in front of the whole class or take me outside of class to have a word with me. Now in 3rd we understand each other and why she was picking on me.
One accomplishment that I've made this quarter that I'm proud of is that I have improve my grades. In the last 2 quarters I was being lazy and my grades were down, my parents were telling me, " You grades better go up or else you will not be going out with your friends and you will not be playing basketball." after I heard my parents say that I was on my game. I was doing my homework like Terminator trying to hunt down Sarah Connor.

Night Blog
Elie Wiesel was a very pious man until he went to the concentration camps. Start of the book he is explaining how his life was before he started going camps, “One day I asked my father to find me a master to guide me in my studies of cabbala” (Wiesel 1). This is explaining that he is trying to look for a master that can teach him more about his religion. A few pages after Wiesel say, “Never shall I forget those flames which consumed my faith forever. Never shall I forget those moments which murdered my God and my soul…” (32). Elie is thinking that he’s the lowest that he is ever been. Then he saying that his God is gone and will not come back.
Now he is starting to lose his faith on God. In the book Wiesel says, “During the day I studied the Talmud, and at night I ran to the synagogue to weep over the destruction of the Temple” (1). Which shows Elie is very passionate and emotional about Judaism. Then he announces that, “Why should I bless His name? The Eternal, Lord of the Universe, the All-Powerful and Terrible, was silent. What had I to thank Him for?” (31). Elie is beginning to question his faith in God.
Elie and his father always had a strong father and son connection until they go to the concentration camps. Elie says, “They're bombing Buna! Someone shouted. I thought of my father. But I was glad all at the same time” (57). This is showing that Elie is carrying for father and he's worried about his father when something is going to happen to the camp that someone can be killed. When Elie is about to finish with misery camps he's starting to pass over his father. The novel says, “ Our first act as free men was to throw ourselves onto the provisions. We thought only that. Not of revenge, not of our families. Nothing but bread” (Wiesel). This is analyzing that Elie was questioning about when he was free he didn't want to kill the people who killed his father that shows he has given up on him.

Berlin Memorial Activity
I learned loads of things when Hitler became leader of Germany. I learned that the Reichstag was starting to dissolve when Hitler started becoming the dictator of Germany. Another that I learned he made lots of rules/restrictions and the jobs away from the Jews. He made over 400 restrictions/rules. Examples are, Jew are expelled from sports clubs, Jewish actors and actress prohibited from performing, Jews to hand in drivers licenses, Jews are not allowed to have pets, and etc.
I believe the monument was built because to overcome the discrimination that Jews faced during the Holocaust.
I noticed that there were a lot of laws passed in certain years, like in the very first year there were more than five laws maybe even ten passed against the Jews. Then, the next three years there were 7 laws passed in total, it keeps going like a pattern. I believe I know why this was happening, I think that they started off big then gave it some time so the Jews would get use to it, then go back to big, the doing that as a pattern so the Jews don't panic as much because they're getting use to it.
Out of all the restrictions laws , the one that I'll have trouble dealing with is not having pets. I say this because I have a dog named Yoshi and he's one of the best things that ever happened to me. He's been with me since I was in fifth grade. Without him is like losing a family member to me. He always puts a smile in my smile face. Like the the time I got detention on Monday and I came home all depressed, but when I saw him he was very eager to see me waving his tail uncontrollably, that one moment made my day.

Where are you in your 20 Book Challenge?
In my 20 Book Challenge, I have only read 10 books. I have read: Marijuana, Hooked, Drugs and Trying to be Perfect, Drugs and Friends, Drugs Testing , and more but I have forgotten the names of the books. I think could've read more books, but I have a lot of school work to do and I'm just too lazy to read. In the future I'll try to read more books, my goal when 4th quarter ends is that I'll have read 20 books.
Of the books you have read this quarter, which was your favorite? Why?
Out of all the books that I have read in 2nd quarter my favorite book will have to be, Drugs Testing. This is my favorite book because it explains, what is drug testing, and how different drugs could last in your system. Then, it tells a story about a high schooler, how he had been drug tested by his school, he was then tested positive, so he cut from his basketball because he was tested positive for drugs. Overall, the book was very detailed, and I really recommend reading this book.

I had a bunch of homework to do in my other classes , but when you include ELA into the conversation it's like I have trillions of homework to do. One of the strategies that I use to overcome this problem as by going to the After School Program and doing my homework there, and I'll ask one of the teachers in the program for help if I don't understand one of the questions

Book talk
The book that I finished reading was, Hooked. This book was talking about people having addictions and how addictions gets started. There were many people who were talking about their addictions, but I’m going to talk about one character that has caught my attention. In the book it talk about this girl teenager in New Jersey, she was a little out of shape, and she wanted to lose weight because kids at her were making fun of her, so she woke up 6 in the morning everyday, and she was grinding hard until it got a little bit out of control. Her parents notice she had an addiction of exercising when she didn't want to go to her grandmother’s for Christmas, they had been going there for many years for Christmas.
I really do recommend this book because it talks about all kinds of things that can happened to people when they encountered any contact with anything. It gives you advices about what to do with these situations. So if anyone how is going through this kind of stuff, the picking up this book will best suit you. Or if you want to just want to have background knowledge about these things, then pick up the book.

Torture/abused
You know that each and everyday there are people who are breaking the “Universal Declaration of Human Rights.” The “Universal Declaration of Human Rights” (UDHR) is a declaration adopted by the United Nations General Assembly. Then, in December 13, 2016, Ahmad Ishchi told the New York Times that, he had been rape, and tortured, “Tuesday that he had been tortured and raped with an assault rifle after being abducted by General Dostum last month.” Ahmad Ishchi said that General Dostum, “ I can kill you right now, and no one will ask, General Dostum told him. He claimed the Vice President stepped on his throat and pressed down after he had already been beaten and bloodied.”, this shows that the VP of Afghanistan was abusing a human being. This explains how VP of Afghanistan has done something really horrific, and broken a human right, but the VP something else to say, “General Dostum’s office. This website “Claiming Human Rights ”, it explains this human right, “ No one shall be subjected to torture or to cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment.”
Slavery
“No one shall be held in slavery or servitude; slavery and the slave trade shall be prohibited in all their forms.”, this explains how people shouldn't be slaves no matter what. “There are tens of millions of people trapped in various forms of slavery throughout the world today.”, says “ United for Human Rights.”. All over world they're millions people trapped in many places, according it says, “There are tens of millions of people trapped in various forms of slavery throughout the world today.”, this explains how they're people trapped in many places.
Education
Kids all over the world could have an education, but they're lots of kids that don't attend to school, according to this reading, “GLOBAL PARTNERSHIP for EDUCATION.”(GPE) it says that, “In total 121 million children and adolescent are currently out of primary and lower secondary school worldwide - a number that has remained essentially constant since 2007. 78 million opt these children live in GPE countries.” This explains how millions of children all over world cannot attend school, but in the “Universal Declaration of Human Rights.”, it say that, “Everyone has the right to education. Education shall be free, at least in the elementary and fundamental stages.”, the GPE are trying to help, the article says that, “Promoting the use of GPE funds to ensure that more children get access to a quality education.” This explains how the GPE are trying to help kids that don't go school, so they are promoting funds. This is one of the ways that kids could attend to school.

Nonfiction book
The nonfiction book that I'm currently reading is “Hallucinogens” by Ann Ricki Hurwitz and Sue Hurwitz. This book is about there is some different types drugs like marijuana (pot), mushrooms, Special K, and etc, could make you hallucinate after using it. Some of this drugs might even last longer than others.
The thing that I found interesting in the passage was when it said , “For centuries, naturally occurring hallucinogens “ Magic mushrooms,” and marijuana have been used for medical, social and religious purposes. More recently, synthetic versions of hallucinogenic drugs have been produced, such as PCP, LSD, ecstasy, and “Special K.” Many people think that the abuse of hallucinogens was a problem only in the 1960s, but the truth is that use today is on the rise, particularly among teens. According to a 1998 study, 49 percent of twelfth graders---that's almost half---have tried marijuana”. I found this interesting because it talks about how there is some drugs that can be help to humans like for medical reasons.

Thankful blog
I'm grateful to have my friends, and family for being in my life. I'm grateful to have my mom and dad because they have been through all the bad things that I have done to them, and they just keep going no matter what, just like a robot, this is why I'm really grateful to have them in my life. I'm really glad to have my two younger siblings because they have done a lot for me, so much that I can't count how many times they have saved my life, like they have taken the blame if I did something bad, or even when I lose money they will give me some money.
I'm thankful to have my friends because they be with me since start. When I was in kindergarten, I meant my friend Alex C. He was the first friend I ever had in my elementary school. He's still one of my friends to this day, after 8 years. This goes along with two other friends that I had in kindergarten, Carlos C, and Melanie R.

Article of the Week Impressions
During ELA class I learned many things. An example is that scientists have found a planet in our solar system. They call this the "Super Earth" because this planet is 10 times bigger than planet Earth. The scientists also found out that this planet is a billions miles away from the dwarf planet Pluto, which means that the sun is not putting much light on it. This is why scientists can't really see the planet, but they have lots of evidence that it's real.
Another topic I learned is that in New Zealand just had a horrific earthquake. The earthquake’s magnitude was a 6.3. This magnitude was the highest earthquake magnitude in New Zealand history. At the beginning of the earthquake only two people had died, but after a little while, there were thousands of dead people because the earthquake started a tsunami.

Election Reflections
After the 2016 Presidential Election, I thought this election was very competitive, but overall I thought it was rigged because Hillary Clinton should've won, she could've been the first female president in US history, she also confident, competitive, and straightforward, but her opponent Donald Trump a person who lies, a racist, and tells people that women are objects, won the Election.
I'm very eager for 2020 Presidential Election because I'll be voting . If Hillary Clinton ran for office again I would immediately vote for her, no hesitation. If she doesn't run for office, then I will have to vote another candidate that I think will help the nation.
I will not involve with politics because I really don't like it. It's also too boring, and complicated. But this is the first time I watched politics because I was wondering how was it going to down between Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump.

Investigative Journalism
You know that you could see some disgusting things when you're at a place. For example, on October 23rd, 2016, around 3 p.m. There was a middle school teenager who vomited on a man at Six Flags Great America, Gurnee, IL. The teenager threw up because he ate a bunch of candy before he went on the ride Goliath, and after the ride he just threw up. The teen said “I’m sorry”. The kid felt mortified, and the guy was furious, but he took it like a man and said, “It’s ok”. The teenager helped the guy to get cleaned up. Now you know when you should eat and not eat candy not eat candy, or this might happen to you.

First quarter reflection
For the 10 book challenge, I haven't been reading as much that I should be, because I don’t like read. I think that books are lame, boring, and waste of your time. But I have read some book like about 3-4 books, some books that I read about were drugs, nonfiction , and fiction books. But, one of the books that like the most was DRUGS, DRUG TESTING, AND YOU by Lawrence Clayton, PH.D. I like this book because it taught me that drugs could be in your system for about 90 days. It also says that if a player takes drugs, and gets tested and turns to be a positive, they might be suspended from their team or even the league.
I think I haven't use a lot strategies in ELA. But I have used some of strategies that Mrs. Larson has taught us during ELA. One strategies is when I was in ELA and Mrs. Larson taught me and classmates how to use signpost when we are reading a book. Another strategy that I use is when I'm practicing my vocabulary and prefixes for 1 hour, but in the first 30 minutes I practice my vocabulary, then I practice my prefixes for the other 30 minutes. My finally strategy is working on my homework during The After School Program, so I won't all my homework at home.
I learned that things in the world are taking very seriously. Also, by working hard and preserving you could be something in life.Then, by reading books you could be learning new words. Finally, you have to work with what got, and even work with people that you don't like. Finally, you have to get your work done quick so you won't be falling behind or maybe getting fired.

Movie vs. Book
Paragraph 1 compare and contrast: The book The Giver and the movie The Giver are both similar and different one event from the the movie is when Jonas leaves his dwelling in the night ( against the rules) and goes to the nurturing center to get Gabe. Jonas was planning on taking Gabe because if he didn't Gabe would be release the next morning. When he was in the nurturing center Fiona helped his get Gabe and distract the guys that was after Jonas. In the book the author states, “Now at the bridge , hunched over on the bicycle, pedaling steadily “ (163). Gabe is with Jonas's family dwelling and he sleeps in Jonas room. Some ways the movie and book , are the same is by Jonas taking Gabe with him when he escapes and when Jonas left he took a bike. A difference from the book and the movie she was assigned as a nurturer. Fiona assignment was different because if she wasn't a nurturer Jonas wouldn't be to take Gabe with him and instead be caught by someone else or the guys who chasing him.
Part 2 : There were a lots of differences in the setting from the book and the movie in the ending. For example, in book elsewhere is far away and in the movie elsewhere means is near the edge of the community. In the book rivers divide the communities which Jonas has pass in order to get to elsewhere so located. In the movie they chose to do it this way because the guys that were following Jonas would eventually caught him but since he jumped off the edge they couldn't chase him anymore. In the book they it this way because Jonas would have to go through a journey to get to elsewhere with only the planes looking for him. So because of these changes, it changes the story by, in the book Jonas and Gabe could eat the scraps of the family units in their dwelling. In the movie It doesn't take long to get to elsewhere.
The movie The Giver gave me a better understanding of The Giver. When Jonas and Gabe sled down the mountain and pass the tower, the memories The Giver gave Jonas all went back to the community. It was a better understanding of what happened because I could see it, and I didn't understand how the memories went back to the community in the book because you could see it. The Giver gives the memories to Jonas by grabbing his arms and giving him the memories that he thinks he is in the memories to Jonas the movie gives a better understanding by seeing how he gives Jonas the memories

Giver blog
Paragraph 1: In the book The Giver by Lois Lowry, Jonas would be a dynamic character. He has a huge change from the beginning of book till the end of the book. In the beginning he didn't like sharing thoughts. For example, when he was going to tell his dream to his family he told himself, “He paused. He knew he had to tell it all, that it was not only all right but necessary to tell all of a dream. So he forced himself to relate the part”, (36). This quote explains what I'm saying because he forced himself to tell his dream to his family. Now in the end of the book he now starts to be liar. Another example is when Jonas is with his friend Asher, and Jonas touches Asher, “He put his hands on Asher's shoulders… What's the matter? Asher asked uneasily… No, nothing. I thought for a minute that they were wilting”... (99). This explains what saying because Jonas was thinking of something else that couldn't tell Asher, so Jonas lied to Asher.
Theme: (Make decisions, choices, unique). I think this was the lesson or message of this book because everybody should make their own decisions, for example when Jonas had watched the released that his father was in, Jonas started crying because now he knows the true meaning of release, “I won’t! I won’t go home! You can’t make me!”(152). This means that Jonas started crying because now he knows the true meaning of release. Also this explains what I'm saying about how about making choices and decisions, and how Jonas is making his own choice not to go home because his father. Another example is when Jonas is about to leave the community, “ He grabbed instinctively for Gabriel; and the new child” (171). This quote shows that Jonas is taking Gabriel because it was his choice, so they won't release him.

The Giver Blog
When I was reading The Giver by Lois Lowry, there were some Memory moment shared by the main character, Jonas. One of them I want a to share is when Jonas remembers when they got his sister Lily, another main character. “Though Jonas had only become a five the year that they acquired Lily and learned her name, he remembered the excitement, the conversations at home, wondering about her: how she look, who she would be, how she would fit into their established family unit”. (12) This memory moment explains how Lily came into Jonas’s life.
In Chapter one, there were some Again and Again shared with Jonas. One example of Again and Again is when Jonas’s mother reminds Lily about the “Rules”. “Maybe we should keep him,” Lily suggested sweetly, trying to look innocent. The look was fake, Jonas knew; they all knew. “Lily,” Mother reminded her, smiling, “ You know the rules.” Two children-one male, one female-to each family unit. It was written very clearly in the rules. Lily giggled. “Well,” she said. “I thought maybe just this once.”(8) This Again and Again explains if you have three child's, you might get a lot of trouble.
